TRY EVERYTHING!

I recently got to pay close attention to the lyrics of the song "Try Everything" by Shekira and I was deeply moved by how the wordings of the song resonated strongly with the drive I had and still have about caking. 3 years back when I considered designing and caking for clients, I knew next to nothing about fondants, and the modern art of cakes. All I knew was the old fashioned way my mum worked her way around royal icing and as for her cake recipe.... it never stuck to my brain. So here was I, suddenly hit with the passion to sell cakes, wondering where to start and who to start with.

I tried everything starting with recognizing I needed to ask questions, pay deaf ears to those who didn't think I could, make mistakes (there were lots of them- story for another day), learn from my mistakes, never give up till I reach the end and then start again.

Here I am, three years from where I started and still trying everything. Everyone should.

Telling Stories with Cakes

I always knew I wanted to tell stories with cakes. I literally would not touch a cake job if there was no interesting story to tell. It was either a love story, a tale of triumph, a celebration of hard work, commitment or a precious memory that knitted the lives of the people involved. So for me a cake order wasn't just another line in the food menu but a symbol of thoughts and words waiting to be creatively expressed.

It has always been important for me to understand the emotions around the celebration and then the personality behind the celebrant/client. Where specifications have been made I offer modifications and it is always a joy to have them accepted and incorporated. From creaming to decorating and making the final touches, every step is carefully done to keep the story in mind.

All Cakes are stories but not all of them are told well. This is simply because it takes a good cake story teller to tell them well.
